Cephalocereus senilis, commonly known as the Old Man Cactus, is a unique and striking cactus native to Mexico. Its most distinctive feature is its long, white, shaggy hairs that give it the appearance of an elderly man's beard.

Key Characteristics:

  • Columnar Growth: This cactus grows tall and columnar, often reaching heights of 15 feet or more.
  • White Hair: The most striking feature is its dense coat of long, white hairs that cover its stems. These hairs serve as a protective layer, shielding the cactus from the intense sun and heat of its desert environment.
  • Spines: Beneath the hairs, the cactus has sharp spines that provide additional protection against predators.
  • Nocturnal Flowers: The Old Man Cactus produces large, solitary flowers that are typically red, yellow, or white. These flowers open at night and are pollinated by moths.

Care and Cultivation:

  • Sunlight: The Old Man Cactus requires plenty of sunlight to thrive. It is best suited for a sunny location, either indoors or outdoors.
  • Watering: Like most cacti, the Old Man Cactus is drought-tolerant and prefers to be underwatered rather than overwatered. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
  • Soil: A well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix is ideal.
  • Temperature: This cactus prefers warm temperatures and can tolerate some frost. However, it is best to protect it from extreme cold.
