Euphorbia - Pulvinata

Referred to as the Pincushion Euphorbia, this low growing small succulent forms clumps and is freely branched at ground level, with stems regularly and densely packed into cushion-like masses or mounds. The stems are green or greenish yellow when young with rudimentary, soon deciduous leaves leaving tiny white scars. They are globose at first, becoming columnar with age, usually 7-angled, up to 12 inches (30 cm) tall, and up to 1.4 inches (3.5 cm) in diameter. Leaves are linear-lanceolate, up to 1.2 inches (3 cm) long. Spines are modified sterile peduncles. They are white to purple, depending on the season, and up to 0.8 inches (2 cm) long. The flowers are yellow. They are up to 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter in the male plants and up to 1.2 inches (3 cm) in diameter in the female plants. Cyathia are solitary sessile or on short peduncles. The involucral glands are dark purple or brownish red. Fruits are obtusely 3-angled capsules, up to 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter, with pale brown seeds. Prefering a sunny position, watering whenever the soil is dry several inches below the surface. Water deeply, but don't let them sit in wet soil, which can cause root rot. and as it is a Euphorbia, care must be taken when handling these plants. White sap emerges from leaf breaks, and this sap is poisonous.
