Stenocactus - Assorted
the Stenocactus is a genus of cacti in the Cactaceae family. They are native to the Chihuahuan desert in Mexico and are popular among cactus collectors due to their unique appearance and relatively easy care requirements.
Stenocactus are known for their globose or barrel-shaped bodies, which remain relatively small, making them ideal for potted plants. Their most striking feature is their unique ribs. Most species have numerous, very thin ribs that are wavy or fin-like, giving them a look reminiscent of brain coral or even a brain, hence the common name “brain cactus.”
Stenocactus usually have prominent spines, but not so many that they obscure the stem. The spines come in various colors and lengths, depending on the species. Flowers typically arise at the apex of the cactus and are often white with a wide, dark pink midstripe, but some varieties have plain creamy white flowers. They are one of the first cacti to flower in a collection, often blooming in the spring.
There are around ten recognized species of Stenocactus, but due to a long history of name changes and variations within each species, identification can be challenging.
